In the heart of Aurillac
Around Place du Square, Aurillac unfurls its cobbled lanes, fountains and dark volcanic-stone houses. Discreet Notre-Dame-aux-Neiges Church watches over the centre. Above, the Château Saint-Étienne and its medieval keep host the Volcano Museum, which tells Cantal’s fabulous geological story. An instructive visit nicely extended with a quiet coffee on a terrace.
The street theatre festival
Every August, Aurillac’s International Street Theatre Festival turns the city into a huge open-air stage. Since 1986, acrobats, storytellers, musicians and performers have taken over the streets, courtyards and parks for four days. A rare buzz, ideal to laugh, talk and be yourself: a perfect setting for a spontaneous meeting and a drink shared between two shows.
Towards the Cantal volcanoes
A few kilometres away, Puy Mary, a Grand Site of France, raises its pyramid silhouette at 1,783 metres: the climb from Pas de Peyrol takes twenty minutes, and the view plunges over glacial valleys. The Jordanne and the Cère offer lovely waterside walks. On Lyad, Aurillac members share their favourite corners; it is up to you to find someone to climb the next summit with.
